Record #122601:

Disintegrating ice front of Shirase Glacier east Antarctica / Fumihiko Nishio, Kohei Cho, Katsuki Seko.

Title: Disintegrating ice front of Shirase Glacier east Antarctica / Fumihiko Nishio, Kohei Cho, Katsuki Seko.
Author(s): Nishio, Fumihiko.
Cho, Kohei.
Seko, Katsuki.
Date: 1993.
Publisher: Mombetsu: Okhotsk Sea & Cold Ocean Research Association :
In: Eighth International Symposium on Okhotsk Sea & Sea Ice and ISY/Polar Ice Extent Workshop abstracts; 1-5 February 1993, Mombetsu, Hokkaido, Japan. (1993.),
Abstract: Fastest flowing Antarctic glacier: 2 to 3 km a⁻¹. Since 1957, floating ice tongue has disintegrated three times, due to retreat of fast ice in Lutzöw Holmbukta. Since 1957, annual mean air temperature at Syowa station has increased by 1°C, and in 1980 it was 2°C higher than annual average. This suggests that fast ice in bay is probably sensitive to climate change and rapid shrinkage of glacier is associated with this.
