Determination of dielectric constant of young sea ice using microwave spectral radiometry / Karen M. St Germain, Calvin T. Swift, Thomas C. Grenfell.
Title: | Determination of dielectric constant of young sea ice using microwave spectral radiometry / Karen M. St Germain, Calvin T. Swift, Thomas C. Grenfell. |

In: | Journal of Geophysical Research. (1993.), Vol. 98(C3) (1993) |
Abstract: | Presents microwave brightness temperature measurements across C band during growth of saline ice sheet. Data at six frequencies of stepped frequency microwave radiometer exhibited oscillatory behaviour as ice sheet developed, indicating coherent effect in emission. Ice thickness and angle of incidence were monitored continuously, making it possible to solve for dielectric constant of ice sheet at ice thicknesses corresponding to local brightness temperature maxima and minima. Resulting values for dielectric constant are large enough for extremely thin ice but then decrease to approach accepted first-year ice value as ice become optically thick. |
