Abstract: Data set of coincident Ka band passive microwave images and air photographs acquired in Chukchi-Beaufort seas in March 1983 was analyzed to evaluate radiometric signatures of deformational features in sea ice. 115 fractures and 197 pressure ridges were examined for physical appearance (relative age, snow cover, ice type, width, orientation) on basis of photographic evidence, and radiometric character (brightness temperature, radiometric contrast with respect to adjacent ice, radiometric profile across feature) was interpreted from digital passive microwave images. From these observations and prevailing microwave theory, conceptual radiometric models are developed that describe phenomena from which signatures of deformational features observed in passive mucrowave images arise.
