Determination of pollen accumulation rates in frozen sediments / Xia-cheng Wang, Marie-Anne Guerts.
Title: | Determination of pollen accumulation rates in frozen sediments / Xia-cheng Wang, Marie-Anne Guerts. |
Author(s): | Wang, Xia-cheng. Guerts, Marie-Anne. |
Date: | 1993. |
In: | Permafrost and Periglacial Processes. (1993.), Vol. 4(1) (1993) |
Abstract: | Pollen accumulation rates (PAR) of 48 samples from permafrost core were calibrated to assess influence of ice lensing on calculations. Results show that permafrost formation can radically changes PARs. Accumulation of segregated ice is major source of error, and 9% volumetric expansion of pore water upon freezing should also be considered. Basic result of these influences is exaggeration of sedimentation rates and sample volumes. In northern environments, where permafrost is widespread, PAR data are important in reconstruction of palaeovegetation and palaeoenvironments. |
