Record #122428:
The "flickering switch" of Late Pleistocene climate change / Kendrick C. Taylor, and 7 others.
Title: | The "flickering switch" of Late Pleistocene climate change / Kendrick C. Taylor, and 7 others. |
Author(s): | Taylor, Kendrick C. |
Date: | 1993. |
In: | Nature. (1993.), Vol. 361(6411) (1993) |
Abstract: | Previous Greenland ice cores have documented relatively warm interstadial periods during last glaciation and short returns to colder conditions during glacial to interglacial warming. Here, electrical conductivity measurements are reported from new (GISP2) Greenland ice core which confirms previous observations and also reveals hitherto urecognized mode of rapid climatic variation. Fluctuations in ice conductivity on scales of <5 to 20 years reflect rapid oscillations in dust content of atmosphere. This "flickering" between two preferred states seems to require rapid reorganizations in atmospheric circulations. |
