Record #122425:
Aircraft observations of the origin and growth of very large snowflakes / R. Paul Lawson.
Title: | Aircraft observations of the origin and growth of very large snowflakes / R. Paul Lawson. |
Author(s): | Lawson, R. Paul. |
Date: | 1993. |
In: | Geophysical Research Letters. (1993.), Vol. 20(1) (1993) |
Abstract: | New high-volume precipitation probe, capable of optical imagery of particles up to 5 cm, was flown in winter storm. Dendritic crystals originating aloft in region of weak convective instability were tracked and observed to aggregate into 4 to 5 cm snowflakes within isothermal layer near 0°C. Region containing very large snowflakes was characterized by high radar reflectivities and rapid accumulation of snow at surface. |
Notes: | Geophysical Research Letters. Vol. 20(1) :53-56 (1993). |
Keywords: | 551.578.4 -- Ice needles, sleet, falling snow and graupel. 551.578.41 -- Snow, structure, composition and temperature. 551.5 -- Meteorology. 551.508.76 -- Cloud characteristics, meteorological instruments. E9 -- Glaciology: meteorology and climatology. |
