Abstract: | Preliminary results of seismic and sampling investigation indicate that grounded glaciers deposited sediment in deep troughs that indent continental shelf as far west as shelf break. Offlapping till tongues found in troughs show that ice retreated stepwise from Queen Charlotte Sound at end of Late Wisconsinan glaciation. Detailed studies of submerged deposits define volume and frequency of failure of steeply dipping prograde sand and gravel deposits. Partially eroded proglacial lake deposits were seismically surveyed and sampled and suggest that sea level was lowered locally by at least 170 m. |
