Record #122063:

Rovaniemien muodostuminen liikenteelliseksi keskuseksi / Reija Satokangas.

Title: Rovaniemien muodostuminen liikenteelliseksi keskuseksi / Reija Satokangas.
Translated title: Turning Rovaniemi into a traffic centre.
Author(s): Satokangas, Reija.
Date: 1992.
Language: Finnish.
In: Faravid. (1992.), Vol. 16 (1992)
Abstract: From 1880 to 1930 rail and road transport came to displace waterways. Rovaniemi was well placed as node in network. Railway between Oulu and Tornio and harbour at Kemi combined with timber trade to cause growth of Rovaniemi. Previous road transport by horses using stagecoaches and wayside inns lasted until 1940s in North, since roads could not be cleared enough in winter for motors. Railway was completed in 1909, making Rovaniemi more independent of Kemi. Eventually Kemi link was only one without regular road services, because of convenient railway. Jyväskylä was only other town in Finland with same status as bus centre.
