Abstract: As in Denmark at that time, population of western Greenland in mid 1800s was concentrated largely in 12-14 colonial townships. These were Arctic entrepots, but uniquely densely placed compared with other colonies. New employment arose and population clustered around unofficial as well as official shop markets.
