Strategies for estimating turbulent fluxes in polar ocean boundary layers / Miles G. McPhee.

Title: Strategies for estimating turbulent fluxes in polar ocean boundary layers / Miles G. McPhee.
Author(s): McPhee, Miles G.
Date: 1992.
Publisher: Boston, MA: American Meteorological Society
In: Third Conference Polar Meteorology and Oceanography, 29 Sept-2 Oct 1992, Portland, Oregon. (1992.),
Abstract: Describes two methods for indirect estimation of ice--ocean stress and heat flux from unmanned ice buoys, from direct flux measurements made in under-ice boundary layer. First infers interfacial stress from variance of horizontal velocity, using freezing constraint at ice--ocean interface to express heat flux as proportional to product of friction velocity and difference between mixed-layer temperature and freezing temperature. Second applies inertial-dissipation method using vertical velocity and temperature spectra. Mentions advantages of latter method.
