Abstract: Describes terrain, its routes and population and gives definition of a "Pomor". Tells of fishing "kolkhozes", exiles, camps, labour drafted in during WW2. Most farming was women's work; men hunted or went to sea. Collectives were disastrous, brutally imposed. Khrushchov even forbade ownership of a cow. Farming is again family matter, but lacks equipment. Describes present way of life, layout and activities of villages, role of monasteries, many crosses (also seen in Svalbard) for protection and as foci during persecutions, woodland chapels. Ends with story of one Pomor, Ivan Pokulev,1894-1990.
