Abstract: Confirms earlier finding that probability density function (pdf) of ice freeboard in Arctic Ocean can be converted to pdf of ice draft by applying simple coordinate transformation based on measured mean draft and mean elevation. Examines nature of transformation over entire length of track during May 1987 experiment for which coincident data of sufficient quality were obtained (300 km). Examines question of how density ratio might be expected to vary in time and space over Arctic Ocean, and hence whether transformation of freeboard pdf to draft pdf is sufficiently reliable to form basis of technique for monitoring synoptic ice thickness of Arctic by airborne laser.
