| Abstract: | Parallel text in English and French. Presents sea-ice maps for northern hemisphere derived from data collected from special sensor microwave imager (SSM/I) on Defense Meteorological Satellite Program of US Air Force. Data illustrate seasonal progressions in sea-ice characteristics and interannual variability. Also provides overview of linkages between sea ice, atmosphere and ocean, and explains principles of microwave remote sensing and how sea-ice characteristics are derived from microwave data. As examples of how relationship between sea ice and climate may be established from temporal and spatial variability of sea ice, four regions of Canadian Arctic are examined: Beaufort Sea, Hudson Bay, Baffin Bay, and Labrador Sea. |
