Record #119866:

Characterization of snow on floating ice and case studies of brightness temperature changes during the onset of melt / Caren Garrity.

Title: Characterization of snow on floating ice and case studies of brightness temperature changes during the onset of melt / Caren Garrity.
Author(s): Garrity, Caren.
Date: 1992.
Publisher: Washington, DC: American Geophysical Union
In: Microwave remote sensing of sea ice. (1992.),
Abstract: Changes in physical properties of snow on sea ice occur during onset of melt; these changes have been quantified for Arctic (Greenland and Barents seas) and Antarctic (Weddell Sea), based on 318 snowpit measurements. Using surface-based dual-polarized 37 GHz radiometer and special sensor microwave/imager (SSM/I), changes in brightness temperature of sea ice have been observed for increases in snow depth, wetness, stratification, and slush at snow--ice interface. Representative model for passive microwave response to snow metamorphism shows changes in brightness temperature due to increases in snow wetness.
