Record #119829:

Nickel and copper soil contamination caused by emissions from the "Severonickel" smelter complex / V.Sh. Barcan.

Title: Nickel and copper soil contamination caused by emissions from the "Severonickel" smelter complex / V.Sh. Barcan.
Author(s): Barcan, V. Sh.
Date: 1992.
Publisher: Rovaniemi: Arctic Centre, University of Lapland
In: Symposium on the State of the Environment and Environmental Monitoring in Northern Fennoscandia and the Kola Peninsula, October 6-8, 1992, Rovaniemi, Finland - Extended abstracts. (1992.),
Abstract: Pollution load emitted into atmosphere from smelter is of order (thousand tons per annum) sulphur dioxide 220-240, nickel and copper 8-10. Samples taken from podzolic soils and peat bogs at different distances and directions from smelter. All measures of soil acidity independent of pollution level at sampling points. Nickel and copper decreased logarithmically with distance and followed prevailing winds. Contamination belt runs roughly north-south and covers 3 000 km₂. Soils toxic in radius of 5-7 km.
