Abstract: Sulphur from nickel smelting in Kola Peninsula is main cause of acidification of air and water. Buffering capacity of Lapland waters has been decreasing. Critical loads of S and N are exceeded in Finnmark and Finnish Lapland, but heavy metals near sources could be more harmful than S.
