Record #11970:

En finsk kristendomstype / Jens Otterbech.

Title: En finsk kristendomstype / Jens Otterbech.
Translated title: A Saami type of Christianity.
Author(s): Otterbech, Jens.
Date: 1920.
Publisher: Kristiania: Av H. Aschehoug & Co
Language: Norwegian.
In: Kulturvaerdier hos norges finner. (1920.),
Abstract: Ecstacy is common characteristic of Saami worship, with speaking in tongues and suchlike scriptural behaviour, not acceptable to most Norwegian Christians. Author was priest for 20 years in Laestadian chapel in Lakselv. He describes usual cases of such ecstacy among women at Lord's Table and afterwards, and "o" sound accompanying it. Besides different emotional makeup from Norwegians, Saami are commonly able to get to worship only at long intervals, which makes it more special. 1 Cor14,4&19, Mt21,16 and Lk19,40 are deployed to clarify author's attitude to Laestadian ecstacy. Virtues common to Laestadians that even non-believers recognise are absence of drunkenness, swearing, theft and immorality - faults to which Saami were previously prone. Forgiveness of sins through Christ's blood is taken very seriously. Article ends with brief history of "Baptist" Laestadius and "Evangelist" Raattamaa.
