Abstract: Glacier in New Zealand, characterized by rapidly changing behaviour, probably conditioned by small changes in mass balance. Instability of ice front and changes in thickness are probably Late Holocene developments. Character of moraines outside Waiho valley suggests that stable terminus was maintained during Late Pleistocene--Early Holocene, up to end of Little Ice Age. Change in behaviour may be related to changes in area altitude ratio with firn lines lower than at present. In these conditions, several glaciers, now separate, would have been tributaries to main glacier, increasing its catchment area. Dramatic glacier retreat could result from continuation of trend towards rising firn line.
