Record #119691:

Summer energy balance on West Gulkana Glacier, Alaska, and linkages to a temporal synoptic index / Anthony J. Brazel, Frederick Burns Chambers, Laurence S. Kalkstein.

Title: Summer energy balance on West Gulkana Glacier, Alaska, and linkages to a temporal synoptic index / Anthony J. Brazel, Frederick Burns Chambers, Laurence S. Kalkstein.
Author(s): Brazel, Anthony J.
Chambers, Frederick Burns.
Kalkstein, Laurence S.
Date: 1992.
Abstract: Analyzes summer 1986 daily surface energy budgets, ablation, and variations of synoptic weather types experienced on this glacier. Daily June--August synoptic conditions analyzed for period 1948-86 were undertaken to interpret possible long-term changes in ablation. Water equivalent volumetric loss of 21x10⁶ m³ a⁻¹ is indicated, with 93% of this loss occurring below 1700 m level on glacier. Major source of variability in ablation is traced to sensible heat-flux contributions to melt during summer and is related to specific synoptic conditions. Synoptic conditions that enhance ablation have increased significantly since 1957.
