Abstract: Outlines recent work which led to study of how ratio of mean draft of pressure ridges to mean freeboard might vary with time of year and location. Simple model for seasonal variation of this ratio was developed, based on best available data on seasonal snow thickness, mean density of snow, and mean density of ice and near-surface water displaced by ice cover. Results show that snow load is critical parameter and best time to carry out surveys is between November and end of April. Further recommendations for continued surveying are made, based on results of model.
