Record #119651:

Thickness measurements of Arctic multiyear ice / Walter B. Tucker, III.

Title: Thickness measurements of Arctic multiyear ice / Walter B. Tucker, III.
Author(s): Tucker, Walter B.,
Date: 1992.
Publisher: Seattle, WA: University of Washington, Applied Physics Laboratory, Polar Science Center
In: Report of the Sea Ice Thickness Workshop, 19-21 November 1991, New Carrollton, Maryland. (1992.),
Abstract: Mesoscale (10 to 1000 m) topography of multiyear ice has been examined using closely spaced drill-hole measurements on several floes. Emphasis was to determine amounts of deformed ice contained by each floe and to assess relationships between ice surface and bottomside topography. Measurements were obtained from eight floes, six in southern Beaufort Sea and two in eastern Arctic, north of Svalbard. Hot-water drilling technique was rapid and reliable. Variability of thicknesses was quite large because of deformed ice in multiyear floes (possibly at least 50%). Bottomside was rougher than topside.
