Abstract: Warming and subsequent deterioration of river and lake ice during spring thaw cause changes in material properties. Investigates whether ice porosity or drained density can be quantified in the field. Accuracy and precision of field mass/volume measurements of cylindrical ice cores were obtained by comparing with same measurements made on same samples after careful machining in laboratory. In addition, some samples were later analyzed using submersion weighing method and results compared with mass/volume methods. Suggests that field method may be adequate for characterizing both spatial variability of ice density and temporal changes in density distribution.
