Abstract: Discusses polar environmental protection strategies embodied in instruments of the Antarctic Treaty System (ATS) and definition and use of environmental monitoring. Analyses monitoring goals and objectives and usefulness of existing and future environmental studies for monitoring. Emphasises importance of research-focused monitoring for dealing with potentially large-scale ecosystem impacts.
