Record #119250:

Quaternary perspectives on jokulhlaup prediction / Judith K. Maizels, Andrew J. Russell.

Title: Quaternary perspectives on jokulhlaup prediction / Judith K. Maizels, Andrew J. Russell.
Author(s): Maizels, Judith K.
Russell, Andrew J.
Date: 1992.
In: Quaternary Proceedings. (1992.), (2) (1992)
Abstract: Reviews ways in which palaeohydrologic analysis of Quaternary jökulhlaups can help in prediction of modern events. Proposes simple model to indicate relationship between characteristics of Quaternary jökulhlaups and likely geomorphic controls on them. Demonstrates that magnitude and frequency of jökulhlaups can be predicted with reasonable accuracy for floods generated from drainage of ice-dammed lakes, for which data are available on flood history or on reservoir volume and characteristics of ice dam and tunnel routeway. Fairly accurate predictions can be made based on knowledge of mechanism of flood drainage, likely sediment supplies, and topography and geology of flood routeway.
