Abstract: Abstract only. Impulse-type radar system was used at three closely spaced sites on ice stream in 1991-92 austral summer. Very short pulse length (15 ns) of radar system allowed acquisition of high-resolution reflection records from upper 85 cm of ice column. Radar was used to track drill through firn on 12 occasions: drill stem proved to be excellent reflector and provided clear echo time versus depth records. Comparison with densities measured on cores to depth of 50 m yields velocity--density relation that will be compared with previously reported relationships.
