C-band SAR backscatter from ice on shallow tundra lakes: observations and modelling / H. Wakabayashi, Martin O. Jeffries, Wilford F. Weeks.
Title: | C-band SAR backscatter from ice on shallow tundra lakes: observations and modelling / H. Wakabayashi, Martin O. Jeffries, Wilford F. Weeks. |
Author(s): | Wakabayashi, H. Jeffries, Martin O. Weeks, Wilford F. |
Date: | 1992. |
In: | Eos : transactions, American Geophysical Union. (1992.), Vol. 73(43, fall meeting supplement) (1992) |
Abstract: | Abstract only. Field measurements near Barrow, AK, in April 1992 confirmed that areas of weak and strong returns in SAR images corresponded to grounded and floating ice, respectively. Grounded ice was <1 m thick and free-floating ice exceeded 2 m. Analysis of ice cores from seven lakes showed that both grounded and free-floating ice had upper layer of clear bubble-free ice and lower layer containing vertically oriented cylindrical bubbles. Structure of ice is discussed in some detail with reference to backscatter intensity. |
