| Abstract: | Describes operation of US Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service's snow telemetry (SNOTEL) system, set up in 1977 (operational in 1980). Originally designed to collect data on snowpack conditions in remote mountainous regions of western USA. Recent development is expanded meteor burst communication system, from which has evolved Global Change Pilot Project, consisting of operational network of 21 remote sites in central and eastern USA. |
