Record #119065:

On estimating spatial and temporal variations in the properties of ice in polar oceans / Gary A. Maykut, T.C. Grenfell, Wilford F. Weeks.

Title: On estimating spatial and temporal variations in the properties of ice in polar oceans / Gary A. Maykut, T.C. Grenfell, Wilford F. Weeks.
Author(s): Maykut, Gary A.
Grenfell, T. C.
Weeks, Wilford F.
Date: 1992.
Abstract: Discusses problem of estimating these variations which cannot be resolved by direct observations alone. Remote-sensing data furnish only indirect information on fundamental properties needed to characterize sea-ice cover and its interaction with atmosphere and ocean, but must form basis for monitoring and prediction. To achieve this, physical models are needed that can translate routine remote-sensing information into quantitative data. Recent advances in understanding and modelling evolution of sea ice, locally and on larger scales, are examined, with attention to thermal, mechanical and optical properties as determined from field, laboratory and theoretical work.
