Abstract: Uses three channels of data from satellite-mounted special sensor microwave/imager (SSM/I) to classify snow cover and precipitation on global basis. Technique is based on physical relation between antenna temperature measurements at high and low frequencies and their response to scattering materials such as snow cover. In this investigation, over 40 case studies were used to test classification technique on different geographical regions and on global basis; four of these cases are described.
