In: Eos : transactions, American Geophysical Union. (1992.), Vol. 73(43, fall meeting supplement) (1992)
Abstract: Abstract only. By considering small perturbations from simple compressional and extensional flow, influence of surface velocity measurement errors on stresses calculated at depth in glacier is analytically determined using power series solutions to nonlinear ill-posed boundary value problem. With decreasing spatial wavelengths, power series solutions to stresses show increasing reliance on higher order spatial derivatives of surface velocity data. This is fundamental source of instability in ill-posed boundary value problem.
