Abstract: Abstract only. Discusses problem of whether reduced model exists for whole transition zone between high friction areas, where ice sheet approximation holds, and low friction areas, where ice stream approximation holds. Shows that model can be derived when basal traction varies over length scales much greater than ice-sheet thickness.
