| Abstract: | First of two volumes to present material from August 1991 conference held at University of California, Santa Barbara, entitled "The Role of the Southern Ocean and Antarctica in Global Change: an Ocean Drilling Perspective", and addressing themes including Gondwana breakup sequence and timing, climate and cryospheric evolution, development of surface and deep-water circulation, chemistry and water masses, evolution of biota and palaeobiogeography. Goals of meeting were to summarise existing palaeoenvironmental data from region, identify and debate major remaining questions, assist in planning future drilling, and organise publication of summary/synthesis papers making ocean drilling information more generally available, as in this and second volume. Here 17 papers follow an introduction by Kennett and John A. Barron (pp. 1-6) |
