Abstract: Introductory article to special issue devoted to Barents Region written by Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs. Norway has suggested establishment of Barents Region on model of Baltic Sea Council established by Denmark and Germany in 1992. Barents Region is defined as consisting of seven counties of Nordland, Troms, Finnmark (Norway); Lapland (Finland); Norbotten (Sweden); Murmansk and Archangel (Russia). Discusses challenges and opportunities for region arising from end of Cold War.
