Abstract: Field programme, Seasonal Sea Ice Monitoring Site (SIMS), has been developed in Lancaster Sound/Barrow Strait, to study interrelationships between various sea-ice geophysical variables and aspects of climatology and biology of ice ecosystem. Focuses here on spatial and temporal distribution of selected variables in context of how microwave energy interacts with seasonally varying snow-covered sea-ice surface. Snow-crystal size, structure and snow volume salinities changed sufficiently to affect synthetic aperture radar (SAR) scattering; thermal profiles through snow cover were diurnally driven; ice-surface microwave roughness increased due to sublimation of water vapour from snow pack onto ice surface; and bulk ice salinities did not change. Results from SAR data analysis indicate that geophysical structure of multiyear ice created larger and more rapid change in seasonal SAR scattering signature than did structure for early consolidated smooth first-year ice.
