Abstract: Common characteristic of glaciers in high mountain areas of Asia is that annual accumulation occurs mainly in summer. Shrinkage of these glaciers due to climatic warming is predicted by use of simplified experimental relations between air temperature and mass balance, disregarding variation of other climatic variables. Results predict that small and large maritime glaciers are more sensitive to warming than continental ice cap. Small glacier would disappear quickly if air temperature persisted a few degrees above that of equilibrium state of mass balance.
