Record #118434:

Sea salt dependent electrical conduction in polar ice / John Christopher Moore, Julian G. Paren, Hans Oerter.

Title: Sea salt dependent electrical conduction in polar ice / John Christopher Moore, Julian G. Paren, Hans Oerter.
Author(s): Moore, John Christopher.

Oerter, Hans.
Date: 1992.
In: Journal of Geophysical Research. (1992.), Vol. 97(B13) (1992)
Abstract: Reports dielectric analysis of ice core from Dolleman Island (ice rise), Antarctica. Core was also chemically analyzed for major ionic impurities. Statistical analysis of measurements shows that low-frequency conductivity is determined by both neutral salt and acid concentrations. Statistical relationships are compared with results from laboratory experiments on ice doped with HF. Salts, probably dispersed through ice fabric, determine dielectric conductivity. Salt conduction mechanism is probably due to Bjerrum L defects alone, created by incorporation of Cl⁻ ions in lattice. Samples of ice from beneath Filchner Ice Shelf were measured and displayed similar conduction mechanism. Results allow comparison of dielectric and chemical data from natural ice.
