Abstract: Airborne synthetic aperture radar data (SAR) and field data obtained in March 1988 were analyzed. Based on physical properties of snow-covered level ice, scattering model is used to predict C-band like-polarization backscattering coefficient in experimental area. Average backscattering coefficient and SAR image texture were found to be in good agreement with model predictions. Backscatter signature of level ice was found to be dominated by ice surface r.m.s. height and autocorrelation function; these parameters were determined from profiles of ice surface height, which were measured using laser profiler device with sub-mm accuracy. Present model is expected to be accurate when backscattering is dominated by scattering from cm-scale snow or ice surface roughness.
