Abstract: Helicopter-borne 8-channel ranging scatterometer was used to investigate backscattering behaviour of low-salinity sea ice at 5.4 and 9.8 GHz in Gulf of Bothnia, 6-12 March 1988. Incidence angle of 23° off nadir was used in order to investigate feasibility of ERS-1 synthetic aperture radar for sea-ice mapping. Capability of scatterometer to identify sea-ice types was examined using radar output products at 8 channels: backscattering coefficient and characteristics of radar return versus range spectrum (resolution 65 cm)
