Abstract: Previous studies have concluded that contribution of microalgae to carbon budget is minor. This is based on production estimates for sea-ice algae from nearshore fast ice. Here, biomass and rate of photosynthesis in microalgae collected from offshore pack ice of Weddell and Scotia seas and seas west of Antarctic Peninsula show photosynthetic capacities much greater than that reported for fast ice microalgae and similar to rates reported for Antarctic phytoplankton. Suggests that importance of sea-ice algae to primary production in Southern Ocean has been underestimated.
