Record #117998:
Refraction correction for radio-echo sounding of large ice masses / W. Gareth Rees, R.E. Donovan.
Title: | Refraction correction for radio-echo sounding of large ice masses / W. Gareth Rees, R.E. Donovan. |
Author(s): | Rees, W. Gareth. Donovan, R. E. |
Date: | 1992. |
In: | Journal of Glaciology. (1992.), Vol. 38(129) (1992) |
Abstract: | Presents simple mathematical formula for correcting radio echo-sounding data from ice sheet or glacier for effects of varying refractive index. Method requires some knowledge of variation of refractive index with depth, which may be known from direct measurement or estimated from density profile. If latter is unknown, corrections can be estimated to accuracy of 3% of depth to bubble close-off. Size of refraction correction for glacier or ice sheet with flat bed is typically 6 to 10 m under dry-snow conditions. |
