Abstract: Active and relict ice-wedge polygons are found in north, relict forms in south, and present-day frost-fissuring in permafrost-free areas in north and south. Conditions for frost-fissuring and formation of large polygons are discussed, and also use of polygonal phenomena as evidence of past and present permafrost.
