The compressive strength of ice cubes of different sizes / G.A. Kuehn, E.M. Schulson, D.E. Jones, J. Zhang.

Title: The compressive strength of ice cubes of different sizes / G.A. Kuehn, E.M. Schulson, D.E. Jones, J. Zhang.
Author(s): Kuehn, G. A.
Schulson, E. M.
Jones, D. E.
Zhang, J.
Date: 1992.
Publisher: New York: American Society of Mechanical Engineers
In: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering - 1992. Presented ... Calgary, Alberta, Canada, June 7-12, 1992. Vol. 4 - Arctic/polar technology. (1992.),
Abstract: From uniaxial compression experiments on cubes (10 to 150 mm edge) of fine-grained fresh-water ice loaded at -10°C at either 10⁻⁵ s⁻¹ or 10⁻² s⁻¹, it is concluded that size does not affect ductile compressive peak strength nor brittle compressive strength when strength is measured using superior platens. Size does affect brittle compressive strength when measured with inferior platens, probably because of non-simultaneous failure.
