Record #117949:

Theoretical approach to physical modelling of kinetic friction between ice and snow / Seppo Liukkonen.

Title: Theoretical approach to physical modelling of kinetic friction between ice and snow / Seppo Liukkonen.
Author(s): Liukkonen, Seppo.
Date: 1992.
Publisher: New York: American Society of Mechanical Engineers
In: Proceedings of the 11th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering - 1992. Presented ... Calgary, Alberta, Canada, June 7-12, 1992. Vol. 4 - Arctic/polar technology. (1992.),
Abstract: Presents theory of kinetic friction between ice and icebreaker. Friction force between ice and ship has three components: grooving, water-drop adhesion, and viscous shear of meltwater film between surface. Theory is verified on full and model scales and explains parameter dependencies of friction coefficient. Shows complete modelling to be impossible with present technique, based on Froude's law of similitude, because of viscous component of friction force and dependencies of friction coefficient on scale-dependent parameters.
