Record #117883:

Effects of severe freezing periods and discharge on the formation of ice jams at Salmon, Idaho / Jon E. Zufelt, Michael A. Bilello.

Title: Effects of severe freezing periods and discharge on the formation of ice jams at Salmon, Idaho / Jon E. Zufelt, Michael A. Bilello.
Author(s): Zufelt, Jon E.
Bilello, Michael A.
Date: 1992.
In: CRREL Report. (1992.), Vol. 92-14 (1992)
Abstract: Presents method by which likelihood of frazil-ice jams reaching Salmon in any given winter can be assessed from records of air temperature. Analysis shows relationship between intensity and duration of severe cold, air-temperature record before severe cold periods, and ice jams reaching city. Threshold condition is identified from which probability of ice jams reaching city can be determined from forecasted air temperatures. When ice jam reaches city, average daily air temperatures of 18°F are necessary to maintain jam. Ice-control structure located upstream appears to be helping to alleviate flooding.
