Abstract: Records for Lake Mendota, WI, from 1855 are longest uninterrupted ice data available for any lake in North America. They demonstrate significant warming of 1.5° in autumn and 2.5° in spring. Results predict how lake-ice cover should respond to future climatic change. If warming occurs, duration of lake ice should decrease about 11 days for every 1°C increase.
