| Abstract: | Parallel text in English and Japanese. Presents US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) satellite images received at Syowa station. Satellites carry several sensors including Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR), which views Earth's surface with resolution of about 1 km, and TIROS Operation Sounder (TOVS), which observes vertical distributions of air temperature and water vapour, and total ozone. Area of particular interest here is east Dronning Maud Land to Enderby Land, east Antarctica. Separate chapters deal with clouds; sea ice and its response to climatic variations; and snow cover and land ice of interior Antarctica and interaction between surface conditions and atmospheric phenomena such as katabatic winds. |
