Abstract: 26 rock glaciers have been identified in this massif, and have been classified on basis of activity and form (valley-wall, cirque-floor, and valley-floor). Mean altitude of fronts of active rock glaciers is 2849 m a.s.l., and of inactive ones 2453 m a.s.l. Using data from meteorological stations in Valle d'Aosta, large-scale climatological boundary conditions at lower limits of active rock glaciers were defined by calculating thermal gradient and total annual precipitation. Mean annual air temperature at mean altitude of active rock glacier fronts was -2.1°C. This altitude should represent lower boundary of discontinuous permafrost.
