| Abstract: | Presents analysis of measurements of subsurface ice thickness collected during six submarine cruises in spring. Results show considerable interannual variability in mean ice draft and in open-water extent. This variability limits confidence that can be placed in any apparent trends observed for sea-ice thickness or type since late 1970s, and illustrates need for reliable baseline against which to assess future trends. |
