Observation and possible causes of new ozone depletion in Antarctica in 1991 / D.J. Hoffman, S.J. Oltmans, J.M. Harris, S. Solomon, T. Deshler, B.J. Johnson.

Title: Observation and possible causes of new ozone depletion in Antarctica in 1991 / D.J. Hoffman, S.J. Oltmans, J.M. Harris, S. Solomon, T. Deshler, B.J. Johnson.
Author(s): Hoffman, D. J.

Date: 1992.
In: Nature. (1992.), Vol. 359(6393) (1992)
Abstract: Reports local ozone reductions approaching 50 percent in magnitude during Antarctic spring 1991 in 11-13 km and 25-30 km altitude regions over South Pole and McMurdo stations. These reductions, at altitudes where depletion unobserved previously, resulting in late September total ozone column 10-15 percent lower than previous years. Added depletion in lower stratosphere observed to coincide with penetration into polar vortex of highly enhanced concentrations of aerosol particles from 1991 volcanic activity. Eruptions that year included Mt Pinatubo in Philippines and Mt Hudson in Chile.
