Abstract: Objective was to measure respiratory electron transport system (ETS) activity of microplankton in water column under ice and in open water of marginal ice zone in order to: 1) assess depth and latitudinal distribution and effect of ice and ice edge; 2) determine seasonal changes; 3) compare it with ETS activity and respiration reported from other ocean regions; and 4) find an experimental value for the activation energy of the ETS enzymes to be used in this region under ice cover conditions.
